You don't have a discipline problem. You have a witness shortage. The most reliable finding in behavior change is embarrassingly simple: things that are promised to someone get done at multiples of the rate of things promised to yourself.

The accountabilibuddy: how to pick one and not ruin a friendship

A good buddy is specific, kind, and slightly inconvenient to disappoint. The three rules:

  1. Specific check-ins. “Did you send the application: yes/no” — not “how's it going?” Vague check-ins produce vague progress.
  2. No judgment, ever. The moment a missed day earns a lecture, you'll start hiding — and hidden goals die. The buddy's whole script for a missed day: “OK. What's the smallest version for tomorrow?”
  3. Tiny stakes. A coffee owed, a silly forfeit. Enough to feel, not enough to fear.

Best candidates: a peer with their own goal (symmetry keeps it honest) — not your partner (too close), not your boss (too loaded).

Groups vs buddies vs apps — the honest comparison

  • A buddy is highest-accountability, highest-fragility: brilliant until their life gets busy. Best for: one big scary goal.
  • A group survives any one member's chaos and adds gentle peer gravity. Costs more coordination. Best for: ongoing habits, and anyone who's burned through two buddies already.
  • An app never gets busy and never judges — but it's easiest to ignore, because disappointing software is painless. Best as the logging layer under a human arrangement, not instead of one.
  • The ADHD note: body doubling — working alongside someone, even silently, even on video — reliably helps ADHD-pattern brains start and stay. It isn't about supervision; it's about a nervous system borrowing another one's steadiness. It works in complete silence.

DIY scripts (steal these)

The ask: “I'm trying to [goal] and I do better with a witness. Can I text you yes/no every [day] at [time] for two weeks? You reply with one emoji. That's the whole job.”

The missed-day reply (send this to YOUR buddy in advance): “If I miss: no pep talks, just ask me what the smallest version is for tomorrow.”

The renewal: “Two weeks done — renew for two more?” (Explicit renewals beat quiet fade-outs.)

The Club

Don't have a buddy? Borrow ours.

Small accountability circles matched by loop type — because an Overplanner and a Shutdown Scroller stall differently and need different nudges. Weekly check-ins, drop-in body-doubling sessions, no judgment by design. Your type is your matching key.
