Purpose Isn't Found. It's Uncovered — One Honest Answer at a Time.

“What's my life purpose?” is unanswerable at 11pm on a Tuesday — it's too big to grip, which is why asking it produces fog and a strong urge to reorganize the kitchen. These 15 questions are smaller on purpose: each one is answerable, and the pattern across your answers is the answer.

The 15 questions

Grouped; answer in writing, fast, no editing.

Energy — where your aliveness already is

  1. What makes time disappear for you?
  2. What do you do in your free time that feels like play but produces something?
  3. What did you do last month that you'd have done for free?

Anger — purpose often hides behind injustice

  1. What injustice can you not-not care about?
  2. What do people accept as normal that makes you quietly furious?
  3. What problem do you keep ranting about to anyone who'll listen?

Envy — the most honest compass, once decoded

  1. Whose life makes you jealous — and of which part exactly? (Not the yacht. The part where they make things and don't ask permission.)
  2. What achievement of a peer stung more than it should have?
  3. What compliment do you most wish you received?

Memory — before the audience arrived

  1. What did 10-year-old you do unasked, for hours?
  2. What were you praised for as a child that you've since filed away?
  3. What have you started three times in your life in different forms?

Legacy — the view from the far end

  1. What would you want three people to say you gave them?
  2. What work would you be ashamed to leave undone?
  3. If your career were a sentence in someone else's story, whose story do you want it to be?

Reading the answers: look for the noun that keeps returning (people? systems? beauty? fairness?) and the verb (teaching? fixing? building? protecting?). Your working why is usually [verb] + [noun] + for [whom] — modest-sounding, and true.

The WHY-ladder (the method)

Take any current goal and ask “why does that matter?” up five rungs, in writing. Goal: “grow the newsletter” → reach people → teach without gatekeepers → because access to good thinking changed my life → because I believe clarity should be free. The top rung is a value — and goals rebuilt from the value survive motivation dips, because motivation dips are goal-level weather; values don't have weather. Questions people ask

The value transfers even when the fantasy job doesn't. “Protecting wild places” can live in a career, a weekend practice, or how you raise kids. Purpose is portable; job titles are just one container.
